“Wake Up to the Free Stater Threat!”

Spring is here in the Free State — and love is in the air.

That must be why progressives keep publishing love letters about the Free State Project in local papers across New Hampshire.

Recently, I received notice (from one of our Porcupine Patrons) of a letter he read in a local Wolfboro newspaper.

The author, Denise, thinks the Free State Project has not received the “attention it deserves.” She writes:

“This [Free State] movement continues to recruit people from all over the country to move to New Hampshire in order to create a stronghold for libertarian ideas: a ‘free society’ with limited government, self-reliance, and free markets.

“…they’re also building their community and influencing state politics… disproportionally running for public offices… The Free State movement is the genesis for ‘school choice’ and the ‘right-to-work’ movements…”

Further, in her letter, she does us the kindness of listing many policy reforms that some of the most legislatively active Free Staters have supported, including:

Education Freedom Accounts, directing state education dollars to students instead of systems;
Prohibitions on DEI instruction in government schools;
Firearm safety instruction in government schools; and
Protections for local property taxpayers against runaway school budgets.

She concludes by correctly noting that Free Staters are “using our government to change New Hampshire’s public education in significant ways…“

I’d like to thank Denise for this love letter — helping to spread the word about the accomplishments of the Free State movement — particularly those who are leading the charge to reform broken government school systems.

Despite all the nice things she wrote about us, however, Denise did not intend this as a love letter — but a hate letter.

She wants to warn other progressive statists that they “need to wake up to the Free Stater threat.” Read it for yourself.

As you know, love and hate are two sides of the same coin.

These letters have been a recurring phenomenon lately — but our haters are our best promoters. Here are a few more:

NH Journal: “EFAs Are Plot to ‘Recruit’ Libertarian Families, ‘Destroy’ New Hampshire”
Monadnock Ledger Transcript: “Where is Galt’s Gulch? It’s in New Hampshire!”

As I read these love/hate letters, I am reminded of something my friend (and future Free Stater) Tom Woods told me during a recent conversation on my weekly show, The Porcupine Report:

“What if you bring a bunch of libertarians somewhere? That will disrupt the way things are run! And maybe not in a way that’s welcome to the people on the receiving end. But the thing is, the kind of disruption we bring is… to stop using violence to get your way….

”If the things that you want are really worthy, you can persuade people to support them. So I don’t feel sorry for people who live in New Hampshire, and then suddenly a bunch of Free Staters show up. Serves them right for thinking they can get their way through coercion.”

Our venue, Roger’s Campground, has asked me to share with everyone this update on lodging and campsite availability:

Just a quick update from Rogers — as PorcFest is approaching quickly, we wanted to let everyone know that there are still plenty of campsites available – in all areas of the park.

All RV sites have full hook ups (water, electric & sewer) and can accommodate 4 adults max per site (in a tent or an RV, Pop up camper or trailer) and up to 2 vehicles (car, truck, etc).

All tent sites can accommodate 4 adults max , 2 tents and 2 vehicles (car, truck, SUV only). Please note that there are NO campers or trailers of any kind allowed in the tenting area. Please double check your reservations & make sure that you have reserved the appropriate site for your needs. If you find that you have booked the wrong type of site, please give us a call & we will gladly move your site. We don’t want you to have to set up & then have to change sites. Some tent sites include water, electric or both-while others have no hook ups at all – they are labeled on the map.

The motel is now sold out.

We have been reaching out to everyone in an effort to finalize reservations — if you see that we have been trying to reach you, please get in touch with us. If your reservation does not have all the required info & payment, we cannot hold your site. We will not be adding guests to campsites at the door this year, please make any adjustments to existing reservations ASAP.

A note this year regarding electric vehicles – we do not allow the charging of electric vehicles anywhere on the property- we have been working very hard to get the EV charging station back on line, but that is not something we can control & have no expectation that it will be functional during Porcfest.

To help us Taste the Revolution this year, we are restoring an old tradition: the “One Pot Cook-Off!”

Organized by Edi Swearingen for ten years (2006-2016, with only one year missed), chefs competed across the campground to serve for the best one-pot dish.

This was a great tradition that promoted the values of PorcFest by creating opportunities to share participatory experiences and meet neighbors across all corners of PorcFest.

However, all good things come to an end and the pots went empty for a decade… but not this year.

The only rule: your dish must be prepared and served from one pot in sample sized portions for all cook-off judges. That could mean a soup, chili, or stew — but I’ve been told we can be as creative as we want…

… that’s why I am planning a dessert dish (an oatmeal, chocolate, and peanut butter ganache) that I am calling Little Ayn’s “Objectively, Not Baked Cookies.”

Move over Little Debbie. For the PorcFest XXII One-Pot Cook-Off, Eric Brakey is planning a dessert dish that Ayn Rand would tell you is, by all objective standards, not baked cookies.

It is possible that revealing my one-pot plans will hurt my chances of winning, but I want all potential chefs to know they are encouraged to be as creative as they like.

I also want prospective judges to know they are in for a wide variety of fun and delicious dishes.

For judges, we have only 100 tickets available to participate and enjoy the many offerings of the cook-off.
